We use it to make ourselves presentable to the outside world, handle our personal hygiene, and breathe a sigh of relief when the day’s work is done and it’s time for sleep.

Because of this, personal preferences are profoundly important, and a well-designed master bath takes into account the varying needs of its owners.

Movie Design Inspiration: The Great Gatsby

14671866_SIf you saw “The Great Gatsby” with Leonardo DiCaprio this year, you may have been drawn to the art deco drama present in the film. Long strings of pearls, beaded purses, and over-the-top sets created a world that tempts us to find a way to bring it home.

However, the look of that time is rather overwhelming for 916182_Scontemporary tastes. For example, check out the photo below of a deco hotel ceiling complete with a dramatic lighting fixture highlighting it. Layer upon layer of what is probably wallpaper in the high-contrast combination of red, green and gold emphasizes the varying levels of the ceiling itself. Setting off the look the over-sized bronze and amber glass pendant, about human-size, hangs on a long chain.

8566943_SYou can create a deco feel by grabbing a few elements from that time and incorporating them into your home. Take a look at the bathroom pictured. The rich colored border – set at eye-level – creates the same mood as the bevy of wallpapers in the earlier photo but on a much smaller and simpler scale.

The black marble floor echoes the style of long-ago and the look carries forward with white marble walls.

The vanity also shows an art deco flavor with its shaped and curved legs and marble top. Notice though that the faucet and fixtures are highly contemporary. This brings the space to the present.

One last art deco touch comes from the soap dispenser with its aura of another time. This bath could include some period art and possibly a small statue or vase from the era to finish the look. Think about what you could do in your home to bring the magic of “The Great Gatsby” to life.

Every homeowner with children has a dream of a guest bath that is always ready for company. Instead this bathroom, often the most convenient for children playing outside or in the main living area, ends up a disaster.

Sinks don’t stay pristine when dirty hands get a quick wash before dinner, and it’s almost impossible to find any child under the age of 21 who replaces the toilet paper when they run out.Towels also get grimy and often end up on the floor and mirrors may have multiple handprints. And if you have boys, at best there’s a 20 percent chance that the toilet seat is down at any given moment.

What can you do to discourage a messy guest bath and keep it nice and organized, ready for actual guests? Here are a few quick tips.

Close the door: The simple act of hiding the room will encourage family members to head to another location. They may assume it’s occupied. You can also use this as a code for your family – if the guest bath door is shut, that means that you want it to stay nice for expected company.

Invest in home disposable towels. In packages designed to rest on top of a towel rack, these will keep scruffy hands away from the nicer guest towels or the dressier rectangular disposable towels that sit on your sink.

If your bath is designed with a pedestal sink which provides no storage, add a small storage bin or chest to hold extra toilet paper and a box of kitchen counter wipes. In a pinch, you can do a fast sweep of the sink with one of those wipes.

Have a lined wastebasket in your guest bath. This encourages the family to place trash in the right spot, and a liner is easy to remove when guests are coming over.

You’ll never really solve the problem as long as your kids live t home, but you’ve made your life easier. You can’t expect your guest bath to stay the way you want it constantly, but with these simple steps you may be able to create a space that is ready for company – at least most of the time.

Design Inspiration: Set a Cozy, Rainy Mood

9851687_SWhat’s the best way to enjoy the rain? From inside, of course. The wetter it is outside, the nicer and cozier you feel watching out the window from your dry and warm home.

There’s no denying, however, that sometimes it’s nice to spend time in a space that gives us that fresh rain feeling without getting wet. The following spaces make that happen with good design decisions. Would you like a rainy day even in sunny Arizona? Let’s see how to make it so.

Take a look at the photo to the left. What design elements come into play on a rainy day? Start with the color. This blue typifies the rain – cool and lively – not too light, not too dark, but both darker and lighter blue tones replace blacks and whites.

Next, notice the reflections – rain makes little mirrors of the sidewalks and anyplace that collects water. Instead of the shadows you expect in sunlight, you get blurred reversed views of the people along the sidewalk.

Finally, look for the small dots created by the water falling. Nothing is simply one solid color – everything has variations in shade and texture.

7521907_SNow, look at the photo of the restaurant to the right. Yes, you have a similar blue – color is one of the quickest ways to capture a mood. But there’s more that links this space to rain than color.

Check out the flooring. The large tiles are reflecting in a way very similar to the sidewalks in the photo above. All of the lights in the ceiling and above the bar also show their counterparts on that flooring. Finally, you get the contrast of light and shadow that echoes the photo above along with color variations in the flooring itself. This room really is a rainy day.

9264456_SWant the same mood at home? Well, you may not desire quite as much reflection, but these tiles shine. The shades of blue and small tile choice mimic the pattern and texture of a rainy day. Even the mirror above the sink reflects the tiles so that it looks almost like a contained wall of water.

Cool blues, texture and color variety, and a shine that reminds you of looking at yourself in a puddle before your foot hits it and splashes the image away. Make it rain.

Decorating with Your Colors

11052685_SWhen you were little, chances are you didn’t limit yourself with color. Drawing with crayons, colored pencils or paints, most children will use almost every color in the box.

What happens when we grow up? Suddenly we seem to limit ourselves to a very few options from the rich selection available. Walk through your home and peek in your closet. How many of these colors can you find? Are you seeing lots of the grey, brown and black, or are you letting your bright side show?

8064776_SHere’s a low-risk introduction to more color. Throw pillows are inexpensive, portable and temporary. This room shows what it looks like when you dip your toe into color. It’s better, but it’s a pretty wimpy leap into the spectrum.

495150_SWhen you’re planning to decorate a room, think about starting with a theme. This bedroom has a strong and obvious sports theme, and the art as well as the furniture and accessories play off the idea. Themes are a great way to approach a child’s room, since they often have strong interests.

Adults can enjoy a room that shows off something about their lives or likes also. Do you enjoy traveling through a certain part of the world? How about creating a room around one of your favorite countries or regions?

You could focus a room around a collection. If you like old silver or movie memorabilia, can you put things together to make a room that showcases your favorite pieces? Think about choosing the right furniture, colors and accessories to create the mood. For example, you might want to go with a black and white look for old movies, complemented with some classic movie stills on the walls. Consider looking for a few antique items to match the feeling of your old-fashioned silver pieces.

Don’t feel obliged to make an entire room reflect a theme. Instead, you may want to incorporate just a few things to suggest a mood or idea.
