Simple Tips to Improve Your Interior

Does your interior need a lift? Not sure how to improve certain areas? Below are some simple tips that can uplift any room. You might be surprised how tweaking one or two things can lead to remarkable results.

Fabrics and upholstery have the power to give the “just re-decorated” look without having to actually redecorate. Try brightly colored accent pillows, or recover the ones you have. Pillow slipcovers are easy to find online. Fresh, plump accent pillows act as a face-lift for any worn sofa or chair. Fabrics also have the power to create warmth, drama, elegance and variety to any room.

Window treatments allow you to control light, give privacy and improve insulation. They can also help improve the appearance of a room. Wish you had a higher ceiling? Install full-length panels higher above the top of a window. If you don’t want wall showing in between, you can add a valance that only hangs down an inch or so past the top of a window. Panels and valance combined make a window look higher than it actually is. Treatments made of formal fabric add elegance. Casual fabric gives a room a comfortable feel. Different types of blinds also have the power to create the mood of your choice. White plantation shutters add a classic look to any window.

How Many Pillows Should I Have on My Bed?

How many pillows are currently on your bed? When it comes to decking the bed out in pillows, there are usually two types of individuals. Some enjoy filling the headboard with an abundance of pillows, and others who use one decorative pillow or none at all. The truth is that not all pillows are just for comfort. In fact, many choose to implement decorative pillows on their bed. After all, we spend as much 3,000 hours annually in our bedrooms. Therefore, you will want to love the space that you are spending so much time. But how many pillows do you actually need on your bed?

Sleeping Pillow

No matter what your style is, one pillow that every bed should have are the sleeping pillows. They are essential for a great night’s sleep. Most of us have at least two sleeping pillows, and if you are a couple, you may have four. Typically sleeping pillows are manufactured in three standard sizes: standard, queen and king. Additionally, you can use pillow protectors to increase the lifespan of your pillows. Sleeping pillows tend to get stained with natural body oils, dust mites, drool, and makeup, so it is important to keep them protected.

Decorative Pillows

Beds in decor magazines tend to look nice because they use decorative pillows. Euro pillows which are generally much longer than sleeping pillows are popular decorative pillows. Euro pillows are both functional and decorative. They support your back when sitting up in bed, and they also protect the headboard. Euro pillows are also ideal if you do not have a headboard. These large sized pillows add a sense of height, depth and draw the eye around the room. One Euro pillow is recommended for a twin size bed, and two for a double or queen bed and three for a king-sized bed.

Accent Pillow

The accent pillows are all about injecting some personality into your bedroom. You can use them as an accessory. If you have bed dressing features a neutral palette, you can use accent pillows to add color and flair to your bedding.

To answer the question previously asked, the amount of pillows you use is based on your style and personality. There is no right or wrong answer for homeowners. It is all about finding what adds to your design while making you comfortable.

Patterns: How to Incorporate Florals in Your Home

15359994_SPatterns are a major trend in fashion and interior decorating.  Floral patterns are back in and hitting the scene full on when it comes to home décor and design.  This particular pattern might remind you of floral patterns from your mom or grandma that just may seem dated.  You can add floral accent pillows, floral vases, and even bring in florals with actual flower arrangements to keep your home looking and smelling fresh. Here are a few ways to incorporate today’s floral trends at home.

The floral accents are able to stand out, but are less invasive to the eye.  Using accent pillows is a great way to test out if you’ll enjoy using floral patterns throughout your home

since they can easily be traded out.  It would also be fun if you traded these black andwhite floral pillows for pastel floral pillows during the springtime.  The candles on the shelf are a similar style and, again, are easy pieces to move in and out of the room.  Duvet covers are another great source if you want to experiment with subtle or bold floral patterns in your bedroom.  The duvets will most likely make your bed become the focal point of the room.

You could also make an accent wall with floral wallpaper or floral stencils.  However you choose to add florals into your home, they’ll be sure to add more depth and interest to your design.  Whether it’s through accents, major pieces of furniture, or small décor pieces we hope you enjoy the floral pattern as much as we do!

Design Inspiration – Colors

Color provides a terrific design inspiration for a room’s décor, and there is no room that can take advantage of color better than a child’s room.

In our second installment on using various inspirations to start your design plans, we’re taking a look at a seven-year-old’s bedroom. She and her mother visited a contemporary accessory store and she chose the colors you see here for her room. Her mother snapped a photo of their choices and shared it with the designer.

If you look at the final room below, you’ll notice that the colors aren’t a perfect match. In order to create a space that would grow with her, the designer added warm brown furniture and the softening influence of light blue. She also turned to a yellower green for accents.

However, in terms of mood and message, the colors in the photo are present in this space. Once again, don’t think of an inspiration as an exact reproduction in a design. Instead, it’s a starting point.

The final room also picks up the floral elements from the original photo without going overboard. The diagonal blue-washed wood flooring is an interesting variation on the whitewashed wood floor in the photo.

With a sophisticated color palette such as this one, a change of paint and bedding can help this bedroom grow as the child does, making it work well into her teenage years.

Are you drawn to certain colors and color combinations? How about visiting a favorite furniture, fabric or accessory store to experiment with new color combinations for your home? If you like the way they look in a small format, there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy them when moved up to room size!
