Home Office Design Considerations
With many professionals working from home full or part time, it is important to have a space which provides solitude and comfort. A home office, or room dedicated to strictly work is a must. Although unintentional, activities of others in the home can be distracting and negatively impact work performance.
When talking with your design professional, keep in mind a few key points of creating a home office space which is both comfortable, highly functional and promotes concentration.
- Location is everything. If you are in the stages of building a home you can make sure your home office is built away from high traffic areas such as the kitchen and family room. The opposite side of the house from these areas would be ideal.
- Light control is a must. If your office has large windows or gets lots of sunlight, consider installing shades or shutters with which you can control the amount of light coming in.
- Color is important. Use wall colors which are pleasing to you and make you feel comfortable without promoting lethargy. For example, blue is a terrific color to use in the bedroom when you’re ready to rest and relax, but in the office it may have you wanting to take a nap. Red and oranges make you feel excited but may make it hard to concentrate, so choosing a color somewhere between these two extremes would be ideal.
- Built-in shelving is a plus. Having tons of shelf space to place books, picture frames and decorative items gives a library feel to the home office. Stain shelves in the same wood color as your office furniture or match to the room’s trim.
Having a home office that suits your needs goes beyond just your work life, it will spill over into your home life as well. Once you’ve spent your work hours focused and productive, you’ll be able to walk out the door and immediately start enjoying the rest of your home and family.
Keep Things Simple in the Bedroom
Sometimes more is more and sometimes more is less. We like the “more is less” style of this bedroom. A two color scheme, white and warm wood, keeps the focus furniture.
If you are going for a modern look, soften up the strong lines with texture while keeping the palette simple. We like how the nubby coverlet and shag rug soften the overall feel of this room. Plain window curtains are another way to warm up the room without adding pattern or fuss. While this all white room might be too plain, the soft textures of the rug and coverlet keep it from feeling stark.
Think about shape as well when you are keeping things simple. The bed is the dominant shape for the room. We like how the rectangular bed and square nightstand are balanced by the round rug. The round area rug breaks up all the straight lines.
While this room has a white floor, this look could easily be achieved with wood floors or carpet. Think simple. If you have dark floors, soften them with a lighter colored area rug. If you have carpet, think of adding smooth textures or shiny surfaces—they’ll really stand out.
We also like the white bedside lamp but accessories are a great opportunity to layer color or add an accent color. A glass lamp or a wood lamp would also be a nice choice for this room. Both would add nice texture without disrupting the monochrome palette.
Your bedroom should be a tranquil, warm, stress free environment. Keep it clutter free and keep it simple for a relaxing space.

Trends in Wallpaper
While wallpaper was not so popular in 2010, this year homeowners are passing on the accent walls and are papering all four walls and even the ceiling. The trend towards paintable, textured papers, metallic prints and allover big patterns is growing—just open up the latest issue of a Shelter magazine and you’ll find everything from abstracts to stripes adorning walls in homes from the east to the west coast.
Design trend experts are predicting wallpaper popularity will continue to rise as the paper companies are pumping out clever new options and homeowners are taking more risks when it comes to decorating their homes.
Paintable wallpapers in geometric textures and bead board designs add more interest than just a typical painted wall. These papers are even washable for a more subtle look. For a little glamour, metallics are big right now and wallpapers are available in a range of matte to high shine styles depending on your taste. These pretty papers are great for the living room, bedroom or powder bath. If the idea of a room covered completely in metallic finish is a bit much for you, try just one wall behind the bed or sofa for a focal point.
Big patterns such as wide stripes and massive floral prints are finding their way onto the walls of the homeowners. This bathroom design in one of our models is evidence of this trend with the large classic leaf design in a matte metallic gold on a china red background. The result is warm and inviting and plays well against the coolness of the ceramic tile flooring and vanity tops.
When choosing your wallpaper, have fun and try some of the innovative new options available on the market. If you aren’t sure, we are here to help!
Portrait of a Comfortable Room
Simple solid colors, lots of light, and a variety of upholstered furniture invites you right into this room. What about this room says be comfortable and relax? Let’s spend a few minutes figuring it out.
One critical factor is the sunshine streaming through the oversized windows. You can just imagine a puppy curled up in the sunny spot on the floor. Light is required for comfort. From the hanging light and the lamp to the right, this room also recognizes the importance of multiple sources of light in the evening.
The furniture also invites you to sit and relax. The sofa and easy chair are designed for a comfortable read or a nap. Two ottomans by the fireplace work well for warming close to the fire on chilly days. Accessories and art are simple but large enough to fill in the room’s bare spaces. Finally, fresh flowers and healthy plants always say welcome.
Is your home inviting and comfortable? Can you incorporate any ideas from this room to make your home as comfy as you want? Be sure to think about how you will use and live in your home as you plan design changes and additions.

Two-Level Countertops
The multi-level countertop is a simple idea but it can add a lot of functionality to your living space. In this photo, the granite camouflages the materials on the kitchen counter while adding an attractive design element to the rest of the room.
This approach is particularly valuable in an open living area. When entertaining, the raised counter hides food prep materials and the dirty dishes after dinner. If these are visible, they distract from the design of the rest of the space.
This countertop is narrow but a wider one provides even more advantages. With bar-level seating on the side opposite the kitchen, you have added a breakfast bar, a place for casual snacking or even homework when the cook needs to multi-task by helping children with school while finishing dinner.
From an entertainment standpoint, additional seating provides an extra conversation area, a place for appetizers or even a table for a buffet. It also gives guests as chance to perch and chat with the host or hosts as they prepare dinner.
Solid surface or granite options have enlarged our choices for countertop designs. Why not take advantage of the expanded flexibility and style of these materials to make your kitchen space as functional and attractive as possible? Ask us about about using multi-level counters in your home. This is available on some floor plans, but not all.
