Spruce Up the Patio for Summer

Summertime is the time to renew your home, inside and out. The goal is to clean it well and add pops of color, perfect for summer!  Find out how to freshen up your patio space and have your patio ready when the Arizona heat arrives.

Tip 1: Clean patio furniture thoroughly. Dust, dirt and grime can accumulate even when stored properly. In most cases, using a mild dish soap and warm water with a sponge will clean off all the buildup. Rinse them clean by spraying them down with the hose. A pressurized nozzle will work best for this. Always check with the manufacturer of your furniture before cleaning with any cleaning product.

Add a pop of color by adding brightly colored pots with succulents or vibrantly colored flowers. A helpful tip for potted flowers is to add crumple up newspaper to the bottom half of the pot. Next cover the newspaper with potting soil. This will make you planters lighter and easier to move, as well not using up a ton of potting soil.

You can also add color by purchasing some new indoor/outdoor accent pillows for the furniture. Accent pillows bring fun and color to the outdoor living space. Lay down an indoor/outdoor rug that has a fun geometric pattern or print. Outdoor rugs transform outdoor spaces into a comfortable place where you want to take your shoes off and relax. The best outdoor rugs are made from natural or synthetic fibers that allow water to drip right through. These rugs do not have a backing on them (as the backing would not permit water to pass through the rug). They may only last a season with the Arizona sun, so choose wisely when shopping.

Feel free to spray paint old planters for a bright new finish. This will make any old planters look new again. If you are using the typical white, plastic patio furniture, you may want to hit them with the spray paint as well. Make sure to clean them well before as paint can’t stick to dirt. Read and follow all furniture and paint instructions before starting your project.

Buy new cushions for outdoor furniture. Unless you have well-made indoor/outdoor cushions, most likely it is time to upgrade these items. The goal is to renew your patio space. This is achieved by cleaning and adding pops of color throughout!

The right lamp and bring your room together perfectly. There are three main types of lamps to choose from—table lamps, floor lamps, and hanging lamps. Depending on the space you are decorating, the look you are going for, and how much light you will need the lamp to provide, one of these three types of lamps should suit your space.

The first thing you will want to do when deciding on what lamp to purchase is the size of the space it will be going. If it is a table lamp, be sure to measure your table so that you don’t get a lamp that overpowers it, or is too small to even be noticed. For hanging lamps and floor lamps the principle is the same thing, you will just be considering a different area.

Next you will have to decide what kind of design you want for your lamp. There are so many choices out there and it can seem overwhelming but before you begin browsing sit down in the room and look around you. What is the theme of your design? Do you even have one or is it more eclectic?

Consider that glass bases will look lighter in your space and can work really well with modern designs. Wooden and metal bases offer a heavier feel to them and work well in more traditionally decorated rooms.

Finally, you will want to figure out what the function of the lamp is. If your lamp is going to be the main source of light in your room, then you will want to go for a lamp that is both brighter and larger. A floor lamp or hanging lamp would work well in this situation. Tips for Monochromatic Decorating

Monochromatic decorating has a certain sophistication level that is perceived as elegant and classic. If you are not careful this style can easily become dull and lackluster. Let’s take a look to find out how to successfully pull off this look.

The most important factor in this style of decor is to create plenty of contrast. Contrast can be created by using light and dark monochromatic colors. An example of this could be contrast created with the help of the dark trellis or geometric pattern on accent pillows and dark fabric used on the drapery. Contrast could be made with a dark tray on a white table. An area rug with thin dark stripes is another example. Espresso brown is a common color of contrast against light colors and white.

Textures and layering are also important when decorating a monochromatic style. Example: Upholstery fabric on the sofa with a nice textured fabric, paired with different fabrics on the accent pillows. If the fabrics in this example not been mixed, the sofa would be washed out and boring. Another example is drapery panels coupled with the sheers. The can create an in-depth layer of texture and contrast.

The accessories in the room can also create the contrast we are looking for. Do this with glass and a little bit of shiny metal. This can add another layer of texture as well as some glitz. Glass items are always helpful when decorating in a monochromatic style.

Make sure to keep some life in the space. Fresh-cut flowers are an easy way to add life to a space. If no greenery appears in a monochromatic space it may feel cold and dull. In fact, all interior spaces benefit from plants, flowers and greenery. It is important to always place plant life within an interior!

Finally, the material of the floor is an important point to factor into the overall decorating scheme.  Be mindful to the contrast running through the remaining space.

How to Decorate with Split Complementary Colors

Looking for ways to transform a blank canvas? A split complementary color scheme will no doubt add great contrast to a room which instantly brings interest and variety to your space. However, the downside is that you can end up with a design that looks busy or messy. If you’re interested in doing something different with your home’s decor, this article will show you how you can pull this off successfully.

What Is A Split Complementary Scheme?

In a split complementary color scheme, you’ll be using three different colors. This decor consists of two complementary colors and then the color that sits opposite from the complementary color on the wheel. For instance, yellow and green are complementary colors. Violet is the split complementary color of yellow. Usually, this palette will consist of two warm colors and a cool tone. However, you can adjust the temperature balance as you see fit. If you want to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere then you should use more of the warmer colors in your decor. Paint your walls and use this color in your furniture upholstery. On the other hand, if you prefer to set a cool mood then you would do the opposite.

Clashing of the Colors

Yes, using a split complementary scheme can be challenging especially if you’re not particularly skillful at using colors. To avoid a harsh clashing of colors, which can make for an aesthetically unpleasing look, make sure you don’t overdo the contrast. For a sophisticated look, you can tone down the hues of the opposite color. You can even use more of the two complementary colors and the third color sparingly.

Example: Blue, Violet, and Orange

Blue and violet are complementary colors. In a split complementary design scheme, blue and violet are the dominant colors. Orange should be used sparingly as an accent color to make your space come alive. For instance, in a bedroom, you could consider painting the walls a pale violet and covering the arches in blue. Perhaps your bedding would also be violet or blue and you can add orange pillows as an accent.

From your kitchen’s spices to your bathroom soaps, shelves have you covered from the ceiling to the floors. 

Trick Two: Double-Duty. Doors hold a lot of storage potential and they can help keep your home looking tidy! Install a door organizer to the back of your door to store all different types of items. Your pantry door can hold extra food, your laundry room door can hold detergent, and your garage door can hold cleaning supplies. All you will need to do is group the items into different categories and place them on the appropriate door organizing system. Tips for Choosing The Perfect Bathroom Mirror

What does your perfect bathroom look like? Often, when envisioning a chic bathroom we rarely give attention to the mirror. After all, when we look in the mirror we see a reflection of so many things but we rarely pay attention to the mirror itself. Yes, a good mirror is an important component of the overall look of a room especially a bathroom. You can choose from many different styles, shape and colors.

Size Matters

When selecting a vanity mirror you should consider its size. You’ll need to consider both function and proportion. To create a proportionate or balanced look you’ll need to select a mirror that is relative to the size of your vanity. Here are some rules  you should consider:

–       A vanity mirror shouldn’t be wider than the vanity itself

–       You can line up the mirror up perfectly with the vanity which is ideal if you are investing a custom-made mirror

–       If you have a store-bought mirror than you’ll want to take the 70 to 80 approach. The mirror should be 70 to 80 percent as wide as the vanity. The mirror will look smaller but not shrunken.

–       A functional mirror needs to only be a foot above your eye line. However, the taller it is the more viewing angles you’ll have.

Multiple vs. Single

If you have a super wide vanity or a double sink vanity than you’ll have to decide whether you should invest in two vanity mirrors or one with double the width. If you use two, skinny, long mirrors you will emphasize the height of the room. Multiple mirrors also work with vanities with a single sink. On the other hand, using a single mirror with increased width will open up the room.

Wall to Wall Mirror

For a dramatic look, you can completely ignore the size of the vanity and opt for a mirror that covers the entire wall above the vanity. A wall to wall mirror can visually double the size of a small bathroom.

Frames

Frame or a frameless mirror will work in this space. However, frameless mirrors are often used in the bathroom because it creates a modern look.

Window treatments allow you to control light, give privacy and improve insulation. They can also help improve the appearance of a room. Wish you had a higher ceiling? Install full-length panels higher above the top of a window. If you don’t want wall showing in between, you can add a valance that only hangs down an inch or so past the top of a window. Panels and valance combined make a window look higher than it actually is. Treatments made of formal fabric add elegance. Casual fabric gives a room a comfortable feel.
