How to Decorate with Split Complementary Colors

Looking for ways to transform a blank canvas? A split complementary color scheme will no doubt add great contrast to a room which instantly brings interest and variety to your space. However, the downside is that you can end up with a design that looks busy or messy. What Is A Split Complementary Scheme?

In a split complementary color scheme, you’ll be using three different colors. This decor consists of two complementary colors and then the color that sits opposite from the complementary color on the wheel. For instance, yellow and green are complementary colors. Violet is the split complementary color of yellow. Usually, this palette will consist of two warm colors and a cool tone. However, you can adjust the temperature balance as you see fit. If you want to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere then you should use more of the warmer colors in your decor. Paint your walls and use this color in your furniture upholstery. On the other hand, if you prefer to set a cool mood then you would do the opposite.

Clashing of the Colors

Yes, using a split complementary scheme can be challenging especially if you’re not particularly skillful at using colors. To avoid a harsh clashing of colors, which can make for an aesthetically unpleasing look, make sure you don’t overdo the contrast. For a sophisticated look, you can tone down the hues of the opposite color. You can even use more of the two complementary colors and the third color sparingly.

Example: Blue, Violet, and Orange

Blue and violet are complementary colors. In a split complementary design scheme, blue and violet are the dominant colors. Orange should be used sparingly as an accent color to make your space come alive. For instance, in a bedroom, you could consider painting the walls a pale violet and covering the arches in blue. Perhaps your bedding would also be violet or blue and you can add orange pillows as an accent.

From your kitchen’s spices to your bathroom soaps, shelves have you covered from the ceiling to the floors. 

Trick Two: Double-Duty. Doors hold a lot of storage potential and they can help keep your home looking tidy! Install a door organizer to the back of your door to store all different types of items. Your pantry door can hold extra food, your laundry room door can hold detergent, and your garage door can hold cleaning supplies. All you will need to do is group the items into different categories and place them on the appropriate door organizing system. It is a smart idea to keep chemical cleaners outside of the house and in the garage. 

Trick Three: Stack Em’. If you afraid of losing too much counter space, try storing vertically instead of horizontally. Bins and baskets that stack can save you more room than storing them horizontally on top of their countertops. Tips for Choosing The Perfect Bathroom Mirror

What does your perfect bathroom look like? Often, when envisioning a chic bathroom we rarely give attention to the mirror. After all, when we look in the mirror we see a reflection of so many things but we rarely pay attention to the mirror itself. Yes, a good mirror is an important component of the overall look of a room especially a bathroom. You can choose from many different styles, shape and colors.

Size Matters

When selecting a vanity mirror you should consider its size. You’ll need to consider both function and proportion. To create a proportionate or balanced look you’ll need to select a mirror that is relative to the size of your vanity. Here are some rules  you should consider:

–       A vanity mirror shouldn’t be wider than the vanity itself

–       You can line up the mirror up perfectly with the vanity which is ideal if you are investing a custom-made mirror

–       If you have a store-bought mirror than you’ll want to take the 70 to 80 approach. The mirror should be 70 to 80 percent as wide as the vanity. The mirror will look smaller but not shrunken.

–       A functional mirror needs to only be a foot above your eye line. However, the taller it is the more viewing angles you’ll have.

Multiple vs. Single

If you have a super wide vanity or a double sink vanity than you’ll have to decide whether you should invest in two vanity mirrors or one with double the width. If you use two, skinny, long mirrors you will emphasize the height of the room. Multiple mirrors also work with vanities with a single sink. On the other hand, using a single mirror with increased width will open up the room.

Wall to Wall Mirror

For a dramatic look, you can completely ignore the size of the vanity and opt for a mirror that covers the entire wall above the vanity. A wall to wall mirror can visually double the size of a small bathroom.

Frames

Frame or a frameless mirror will work in this space. However, frameless mirrors are often used in the bathroom because it creates a modern look.
